OER Guides

Note: these are just some guiding questions. Please add to this list and or create new threads.

What is the current state of finding quality OER ?

  • Discoverability not easy
  • Find material through google searching appears easy but the content is not vetted for content type, quality, or use (e.g. Can the content be used in a MOOC or just for personal research, is the source a database or does it contain articles, is it update regularly, etc.)

What resources currently exist?

What might be developed?

For Faculty

  • There needs to be some work related to distinguishing between content that can be used by researcher for personal work and that which can be used by faculty developing MOOCs or Open Courses in general. There is a copyright education element.
  • Vetted sources for open education resources by subject, content, and use
  • The importance of OER for the future? Perhaps an educational piece related to taking part in OER initiatives or OA initiatives in general?
  • Should we have a section on MOOC providers?

For Students

  • Scholarly OER sources that can be used in the coursework

For Researchers
(I would like us to think about non-affiliated community users. This would include the general public but also will help with affiliated research institutes, etc. that do not have access to the full resources of the library)

For Librarians

  • The latest news/information related to OER
  • Questions related what can and cannot be used in OE environments. MOOC providers and use of their content in courses. These questions are arising often at UBC.

What would be a good starting point?

  • Defining OER and OA clearly and what should and should not be considered a part of this resource
  • Are we focusing on provincial, national, and/or international resources?
  • Evaluation of OER portals/guides already available, including:
    • What is good/bad about the guides approach?
    • Who is the guide addressing?
    • Etc. (this will help us decide a starting point)
