OER Funding

Several institutions in BC offer funding to support the adoption, adaptation, and creation of OERs. Here is a list of what funding is offered by each institution. Note that this list may be incomplete and other institutions may offer funding.

Up to $3,500 per application to cover Article Processing Charges (APC).
UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship
Up to $500.

Langara Open Student Scholar First place: $250

Langara Kaleidoscope Fund
Up to $3000 per project.

Open Langara Grant
Up to $1500 for adapting or creating an OER or for incorporating open educational practices. 
Royal Roads University (RRU)
Open Access Publishing Fund
Up to $3000 each to cover Article Processing Charges (APC).
Simon Fraser University (SFU)
SFU Central Open Access Fund
Up to $1250 (CDN) to publish one article in total.
Open Education Grants (OEG) Pilot
Up to $5,000 plus research support to research how the implementation of OER and open pedagogy impacts teaching and learning.

OER Grants
Up to $5,000 for a course redesign to use OERs as their primary course materials.
Thompson Rivers University (TRU)TRU Open Press
Calls for project proposals every year. Funding and support include technical assistance, media resources, copy editing, and copyright review.
OER Development Grant
Up to $6,500 (course release or financial incentive) for a course redesign to use OERs as their primary course materials.
An additional $500 may be available to support travel costs related to dissemination of results of their efforts.
University of British Columbia – Okanagan (UBC-O)ALT 2040-Stream 1: Open educational resources (OER) focus stream
Up to $10,000 for the adaption or development of an OER or for incorporating open educational practices.
University of British Columbia – Vancouver (UBC-V)OER Affordability Grants
Up to $25,000.


Rapid Innovation Grants
$2000 per grant.

OER Excellence and Impact Award
One individual and one team-based award of $5,000 each year per campus.
University Canada West (UCW)ZCT Fund
$750 for faculty who redesign their courses to replace paid textbooks with zero-cost course materials.

Open Access Pilot Fund
Up to $3,000 to cover Article Processing Charges (APC).
University of Northern BC (UNBC)OER Development Grant
For the curation and customization of an OER that will be freely and openly shared throughout and beyond UNBC.
University of Victoria (UVIC)OER Grant
Up to $7500 for the adoption, adaptation or development of an OER.
Vancouver Island University (VIU)Innovate Grant
Up to $5000 or up to $7000 with a VIU student hire.
